In Brain Energy, Dr. Chris Palmer tells us:

Mental disorders—all of them—are metabolic disorders of the brain.” “In Brain Energy, Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Christopher M. Palmer unites our existing knowledge about mental illness within a single framework: Mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain. Palmer explains this new understanding of mental illness in detail, from symptoms and risk factors to what is happening in brain cells, and sheds light on new treatment pathways for all mental disorders, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, alcoholism, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, autism, and even schizophrenia.”

In a recent interview, Chris Palmer tells us how we go about treating mental disorders:

“So the first step is identify what’s causing the problem, if we can identify anything. And then the next step is to think you know, so and then once you’ve identified that, yep, remove all of those factors that you can, if they’re following a bad diet, clean up their diet, if they’re not exercising, get them exercising, if they’re not sleeping, get them sleeping, if they’re using harmful substances in excess, get them to stop doing that, um, those are obvious solutions. If that’s not enough, then we look at solutions that will enhance or improve or change metabolism. And specifically, I’m looking to improve mitochondrial function. And we can think about dietary strategies for that. And sometimes it’s not necessarily just what people would think is a healthy diet, there are specific dietary strategies like intermittent fasting, or fasting mimicking diets, that can have very powerful effects on metabolic health and mitochondrial function. But we might start an exercise program if they’re not doing any exercise. And we can think about lots of other strategies. But those are the two primary buckets, look for the problem, address the problem if we can, and then try to support healthy metabolism, through a lot of common sense basic things.” “The overarching important message for all of you that is 100% aligned with everything that you are about is that we can help people with real brain disorders using common sense diet, movement, sleep and other strategies. Today, this is not woowoo science, this is real science being taken seriously by leading psychiatrists and neuroscientists.

Wow! “This is not woo-woo science.” We can help people with brain disorders by focusing on the fundamentals of energy. Let’s go!
